Study: Motorcoaches Provide Best Fuel Efficiency PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator

Motorcoaches lead every other travel mode in terms of their fuel efficiency on a per-passenger basis, averaging more than 200 passenger miles per gallon, according to a new study by MJ Bradley & Associates released by the American Bus Association Foundation.

The new 2008 MJ Bradley & Associates study, "Updated Comparison of Energy Use & Emissions From Different Transportation Modes," shows that motorcoaches offer a whopping 206.6 passenger MPG, the highest of 14 modes studied.

"On average, motorcoaches use the least amount of energy and produce the lowest carbon dioxide emissions per passenger mile of any of the transportation modes analyzed," the study confirms. Among the 14 modes studied, personal automobiles averaged 22.4 passenger MPG, SUVs 15 passenger MPG, and hybrid cars 46 passenger MPG.

"At a time when automakers are now asking for a taxpayer bailout for their failure to produce energy-efficient vehicles, the motorcoach manufacturers and the independent bus operators who provide more than 700 million passenger trips annually continue to be the greenest way to go, with virtually no federal subsidy," said ABAF President Peter J. Pantuso. "The motorcoach industry continues to attract new riders each day the old fashioned way: through providing a superior travel experience that allows Americans to reduce their carbon footprints while still maintaining their freedom of mobility to go to our country's great destinations, whether for business or leisure."

Indianapolis to Unveil New Airport PDF Print E-mail

The new $1.1-billion terminal at Indianapolis International Airport opens on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Located between the two existing runways, the building will be named after World War I flying ace Col. H. Weir Cook.

Featuring two 20-gate concourses, the airport will have new highway access, much greater garage and surface parking, and an expanded variety of shopping and dining choices. It will be the new first airport built post-Sept. 11, with new security measures in place. Because the terminal, parking areas and location are entirely new, officials are calling it a “new airport,” rather than just an expansion. When the new terminal opens, the current terminal will close.

The centerpiece of the new terminal will be the Civic Plaza, which will feature stunning artwork and dining spots like the Indianapolis 500 Grill, a sit-down restaurant with a Brickyard Authentics apparel and collectible store and an Indianapolis 500 museum. The Cultural Crossroads store will offer merchandise from a partnership of institutions that includes the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art, Indianapolis Zoo and Indianapolis Museum of Art.

The airport will be located on Interstate 70, just west of Interstate 465. It will be a 16-minute trip from downtown Indianapolis. (www.newindianapolisairport.com)

Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau Captures Visitors PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
Each day, almost 250,000 air passengers fly to and from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA), representing 10 percent of all passengers that fly in the U.S. each day.* To capture a larger share of the business and leisure travelers moving through the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) has re-opened its visitors’ center at HJAIA with upgraded technology and a new look.

The new visitors’ center is located in between the North and South Terminals of the baggage claim area. Enhancements include a fresh, new look that reflects the Atlanta brand and six flat screen televisions that will display information about events, welcoming conventions, information on vacation packages such as the Atlanta CityPass and the MVP summer vacation package and promoting Atlanta.net, the city’s official destination Web site.

Of the 38 million visitors that Atlanta hosted in 2006, 78 percent came by car and 17 percent arrived by air travel.** According to Spurgeon Richardson, president and CEO of ACVB, “The increased presence and upgraded technology at the new visitors’ center will help us engage more travelers to explore Atlanta. The busiest airport in the world presents a lot of opportunity to capture potential visitors, all translating in to economic impact for our city.”

ACVB has four visitors’ centers throughout Atlanta, one in HJAIA airport, two inside the Georgia World Congress Center, one inside the Georgia Aquarium and a location at Underground Atlanta. The visitors’ centers are staffed with an ACVB employee to answer questions about the destination and provide brochures and other helpful materials about how to experience the city. The four centers serviced 333,743 January through June of this year, with the visitors’ center at HJAIA handling 17 percent of those inquires.”

Established in 1913, ACVB is a private, nonprofit organization created to favorably impact the Atlanta economy through conventions and tourism. In 2006 Atlanta welcomed more than 38 million visitors, generating $11.4 billion in direct spending and supporting jobs for more than 227,000 metro Atlantans.
