    Where in the World?

Will you find the world's smallest police station?

    Carrabelle, Florida
The station is a phone booth - shaded by a shiny berry tree, and there's a park bench in front where policemen can keep an eye on the town.

    It's All About Groups!
    August 18, 2006

It's that time of year again...back to school.

Those of us with school-age children are scouring the isles of the local Target for wooden rulers and protractors, while destinations that cater to families are enjoying the last few weeks of high occupancy and turnstile revolutions.

In true back-to-school spirit, here's a test for you...visit the Reader's Choice page on leisuregrouptravel.com and tell us your favorite group travel suppliers. This annual program rewards peak performance in eight top level categories- domestic destination, international destination, hotel chain, tour operator, cruise line, casino, theater and attraction: with awards given in Platinum, Gold and Silver.

And unlike other industry awards, Leisure Group Travel's Reader's Choice is 100% "by the people, for the people." You and your peers decide who comes out on top, not a committee or publisher with an agenda.

In this edition of InSite, we continue our popular "group travel guide" series with a Miami spotlight. Additionally, Carl Meadows contributes an article about fighting terrorism and Mike Marchev chimes in with his usual wit and humor.

Remember to visit and support those suppliers that market their products and services through Leisure Group Travel and InSite, they make this newsletter possible.

    Enjoy this edition of InSite.

Even if you've never been there, you know what Miami has to offer- late nights, hot beaches and beautiful people in bathing suits the rest of us can't pull off. But you never really know what to expect, especially on the tourism front. From cafecito and the sweet spice of Cuban dishes to the Art Deco sunsets and late nightlife, Miami is always more than you imagined, even when you've been there a dozen times.

There's a Gold Coast sparkle that is always part of the city's charm, so read on to find more about where to eat, what to try and how to find the best activities in the city for your group.

Marchev Treat Your Customers Like Dogs
    By Mike Marchev

Somebody much wiser than me, long ago, invented a word for a person who was more interested in what you have (or what you provide) than the wrinkled paper adorned with the photographs of a bunch of dead presidents on it. These people were called "customers" and from all I can tell, these people are good things to have if you are at all interested in eating regularly.

It's time to stop horsing around and smell the coffee. Customers are good things and will continue to be good things if treated properly. So, here's an idea worth thinking about...but only if you want to stay in business beyond next Tuesday.

New Orleans Group Travel Returning to New Orleans
    From August's Leisure Group Travel

Never underestimate the power of the Crescent City spirit. Through the turbulence of Katrina and the turmoil of its aftermath, New Orleans is leaping back into the mix, even as the pressure mounts to flourish or fall in this traditionally low-traffic season. Visit with us as we return to New Orleans one year after the hurricane to assess the damage and marvel at the strength of this antebellum beauty.

Carl Meadows Fighting Terrorism...The Group Travel Organizer Way
    By Carl Meadows

In November of 2001 I wrote an article in Leisure Group Travel titled "Stop traveling? I don't think so!" in reference to the September 11, 2001 terrorists acts in New York, Washington, DC and Pennsylvania, which to date, is terrorism at its worst. The subtitle was "If you have travel plans, keep to your schedule if possible. Here’s the reason why...".

Most of what I wrote about then is still applicable today. I thought it might be worth getting this message out again in light of the latest, but thwarted, terrorist attempt in London this month.

Here are some excerpts from that article.

www The Case for Marketing to Seniors Online
    By Danay Escanaverino

Seniors have long been considered a waste of time for online marketers. The misconception is that they are strictly using the internet to email their grandkids and they are not net savvy enough to make a full forced leap into the online world with all of the researching, socializing and online purchasing activity included in the online culture. Getting past this falsehood may be the only thing keeping you from your online marketing success.

Seniors ages 65+ are one of the fastest growing online sectors and they represent a huge opportunity for several products and services. According to a 2006 Pew Internet & American Life Project survey, 34% of Americans age 65 and older go online. Another report, conducted by Harris Interactive in May 2006 found that of the 172 million Americans online, 14 million of those are the 65+ crowd. This number doesn't even take into account the baby boomer generation who is set to start hitting retirement age by 2008.
